If/when your teacher is absent without prior notice, work on ONE of the following assignments:
1. Start learning a new language on Duolingo! You'll have to create an account if you don't already have one, but it's easy - just do it with your Gmail info. Then start learning any language that interests you and show me which lessons you completed when I get back. You can also do this with your phone if you prefer - there is a Duolingo app.
2. Watch the movie "Finding Forrester" (should be available on YouTube) and answer the accompanying questions here.
3. Click here for writing prompts. You need to complete responses to at least 3 of the prompts to earn full credit, and each response needs to be at least one page in length.
3. Watch this video and take this quiz on it. You can use this review sheet on figurative language as well. This assignment will take you an entire class period to complete, so be sure to give yourself enough time and don't work on the other assignment options.
4. Go to this website, watch any of the videos under my Favorites, take the quiz associated with the video, and submit to me. Use teacher code ELA1. You need to submit at least 2 quizzes for full credit.
Extra credit assignments for both semesters:
Extra Credit Opportunity #1: Learn another language on Duolingo! Up to 100 points can be earned, depending how much of the course you complete. You can learn (or increase your skills in) Spanish, French, or Italian. Let me know when you have joined the class and I will assign the content. If you are already doing Duolingo for homework, you may do Memrise or you may join one of the classes above (Spanish, French, or Italian) for extra credit.
Extra Credit Opportunity #2: Read a book and write a "book talk" (basically a short report) on it. The book must be approved by me. Your "book talk" needs to be a paragraph or two in length and must contain the following:
1. The title and author of your book.
2. Explain why you picked the book.
3. Explain what the book is about (this needs to be a thorough summary).
4. Share what you liked and didn't like about the book.
5. Share 2-3 quotes from the book and why you picked them. (The "why" part of your explanation should be more than just, "Because they're interesting." You need to explain why, specifically, the quotes are interesting to you).
You may earn up to 100 points for the "book talk" project.
Please submit Extra Credit assignments by the following dates:
Semester 1 EC due: Friday, December 13
